In 1946 Frank Spellman finished third in the World Championships, moving up to second in 1947 and winning his Olympic gold medal in 1948. He had a seemingly short career, winning the 1946 and 1948 AAU titles, and then retiring after the Olympics, with only three years of top-flight weightlifting competition. In 1961 Spellman came out of retirement and won another AAU championship. He made his career as a professional photographer. He was noted to be an accomplished artist, musician, and woodworker.
