Fred Flannery severed with the Australian Army during World War II and did not take up wrestling seriously until after his was demobilized in 1946, although he had begun training in the sport in 1940. Competing in freestyle in the flyweight division, he made his international début at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, where he won a silver medal behind Louis Baise of South Africa. His next stop was the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he was defeated by André Zoéte of France in round one and Abdul Aziz of Pakistan in round two, which led to his elimination. By the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, where he won a flyweight bronze medal, he was living in Vancouver and representing Canada, having won that year’s national flyweight championship. He returned to Australia, however, soon after his retirement from active competition in 1961.
