Franz Berger was one of the most successful wrestlers ever in Austria. He participated in four Olympic Games from 1960-72, and also in five World Championships and four Europeans. At the Olympics he had his best result of seventh in 1968, at World Championships best result was fifth in 1966, and at the Europeans he won a bronze medal in 1970.
Berger also won 27 individual and 14 national team titles. Since he had no serious competitor in his weight class in Austria for years Berger chose the route to neighbouring countries and fought for eight years in the then German wrestling Bundesliga for AC Bad Reichenhall. After his active career he turned to coaching.
By profession, Berger was a trained brewer. He later worked with the municipality of Wels and led the building regulations office.
