Soviet Viktor Igumenov had won the 1969-71 World Championships, but had to withdraw after the second round in München with an injury. The tournament did not start out well for Czechoslovak Vítězslav Mácha, as he lost his first round match to Bulgaria’s Ivan Kolev. Kolev, however, lost his third round match to West German Werner Schröter, and was eliminated after a draw in round four. Mácha, meanwhile, kept winning, and after five rounds only he and Greece’s Petros Galaktopoulos remained. Galaktopoulos was leading on bad points, but Mácha defeated him by decision to win the gold medal. Mácha came close to defending this gold medal in 1976, but lost his final match and took silver. The bronze medal went to Sweden’s Jan Karlsson, who won a silver medal in welterweight freestyle in 1972. This made him one of only 13 Olympic wrestlers to have won medals in both styles at a single Olympics, but only the third after World War II, and through 2012, he is the last one to have done this.
