Nick Mohammed

Nick Mohammed was born in India where he took to wrestling as a youth. He later emigrated to Canada in his late 20s to join his father, who first immigrated in the 1900s. Settling in Vancouver, he found a job as a welder at a shipyard on the North Shore of Vancouver. He soon made a name for himself in the local wrestling scene by the late 1940s, and was taken under the tutelage of ex-professional wrestler George Bunka.

In 1952, he was selected as a member of the Canadian Olympic wrestling team and competed in the welterweight freestyle event, losing in round 2 to Bill Smith of the United States. Also active in weightlifting, later in the same year he competed at the Pacific Coast AAU weightlifting championships in Portland where he won the Pacific Coast title. An injury in 1954 forced him to miss the trials for the 1954 British Empire Games, and in 1956, he participated in the Olympic trials to compete once again for Canada at the Melbourne Olympics, but ultimately did not make the final delegation. Following his retirement, Mohammed remained active in his sport as a referee in the Vancouver area, and later resided in Burnaby.
