August Jokinen first appeared on the international stage at the 1911 unofficial World Championships with limited success placing 10th. Nevertheless, he represented Finland at the 1912 Olympics in the middleweight A division and advanced to round seven, equivalent to fourth place. His two defeats came against the future gold and silver medalists Claes Johanson and [Martin Klein]. He achieved another fourth place at the 1913 unofficial European Championships. One year later, he claimed his only international amateur medal with silver at the unofficial European Championships. He took two national titles: 1914 in the 75 kg and 1916 in the 82.5 kg divisions. In 1915, he was runner up in the 75 kg class.
In 1917, he started a professional career claiming the world title in Tallinn already in his first year competed for more than 10 years in various parts of the world. While in Canada, he coached local pros. Later, he trained Swedish wrestlers for the 1920 Olympics and Finnish freestyle wrestlers for the 1936 Olympics. He also worked as a security guard and lived in Canada most of the time.
