Alois Totuschek of Austria had won two international championships in 1909 and 1910 in this weight class, while Alfred )Alppo) Asikainen (FIN) had triumphed at a 1911 meet in Helsinki. Totuschek lost his first round match against Sweden’s Claes Johanson, and was eliminated after losing in the fourth round.
Asikainen fared better, advancing to the round one of the finals where he met Martin “Max” Klein, who was from Estonia and represented Russia in 1912. In their match, Klein and Asikainen wrestled for 11 hours under a hot sun before Klein finally prevailed by pinning the Finn. But he was so exhausted from the effort that he could not continue and Johanson, who he was to have met in the final match, won the gold medal by default. Johanson later won the European championship in 1913 and in 1920 at Antwerp, won another Olympic gold medal, this time wrestling as a light-heavyweight.
