Biography

Risto Mustonen entered an apprenticeship as a chimney sweeper in 1894 and started practicing gymnastics. Mustonen founded the Töölön Vesa as sports club of the Töölö Workers’ Association. After joining the Helsinki Athletic Club, he became an active wrestler. He competed in the featherweight division in the 1911 unofficial World Championships and at the 1912 Olympics. There, he was eliminated early after losing his first two bouts. After World War I, the highlight of his career was World Championship bronze in the 58 kg class in Helsinki in 1921 at the age of 46.

After his active career, he was an active sports organizer. He was elected to the board of the wrestling division of the Finnish National Sports Federation. Later, he served as the first chairman of the Finnish Weightlifting Association. In 1939, he was elected chairman of the Helsinki Athletic Club.
