Arthur Gingell

At the 1908 London Olympics, Arthur Gingell lost to the eventual gold medallist, and fellow Briton, George de Relwyskow in the semi-final, before beating another team-mate, George MacKenzie, to capture the bronze medal. Gingell was the West of England amateur middleweight champion between 1906-09, and the Gloucestershire and Somerset catch-as-catch-can (freestyle) champion in 1908 and 1909. He never won the British title, but was beaten in the 1909 final by Thomas Wood of London, whose brother Billy Wood was the 1908 Olympic freestyle featherweight silver medallist. Gingell turned to boxing and in 1910 was the inaugural Welsh amateur middleweight champion. Before the outbreak of World War I, Gingell moved to Canada, and later to the United States, where he died in 1947.
