Biography

A carpenter by trade, Hammersmith Amateur Wrestling Club member Ernest Nixson reached the heavyweight final of the 1906 German Gymnastic Society Championship, only to lose to William West of the London City Police. In 1908, just before the London Olympics, Nixson lost in his only English Amateur Championship final, when beaten by Ned Barrett. The two men met again shortly afterwards at the London Games. After Nixson lost to Jacob Gundersen of Norway in the semi-final he faced Barrett, in the bronze medal match, and again Barrett won. During World War I, Nixson served in the Royal Naval Air Service.
