Wolfgang “Bubi” Ehrl won the silver medal in featherweight Greco-Roman at Los Angeles in 1932. He was unbeaten, even winning against the eventual Olympic champion Giovanni Gozzi, but due to the greater number of wins on points he had two more bad points than Gozzi and therefore ranked second. In 1936, Ehrl won another silver medal in lightweight freestyle, where his defeat by the Jewish wrestler Károly Karpati caused considerable discord among Nazi leaders.
At European Championships Ehrl won three medals, with a 1934 lightweight freestyle gold, a 1933 featherweight Greco-Roman silver, and a 1935 lightweight freestyle bronze. Ehrl was German champion in the lightweight class in 1934, 1944, 1948 and 1950 in Greco-Roman, and in 1935 and 1949-1951 in freestyle. In 1951 he had his last international appearance with a fifth place at the freestyle World Championships in Helsinki at the age of 39.
Originally a butcher by profession, Ehrl became a professional wrestler in 1952. He later received the letter of honor of the city of München and became a youth coach for the club MSV München Ost.
