Biography

Despite not losing any of his bouts, welterweight wrestler Werner Schröter failed to reach the fifth round of the Greco-Roman competition at the 1972 München Olympics, being eliminated after collecting 7.5 bad points. Domestically, he won six consecutive West German titles from 1967-72 and two more in 1974-75. He also helped his home club, VfK Schifferstadt, win the West German Team Championship in 1967, 1969, 1971 and 1976, and again, as coach, in 1988 and 1990.

Internationally, Schröter won two silver medals, at the 1970 World Championships in Edmonton, and the 1974 Europeans in Madrid. He later turned to coaching at VfK Schifferstadt, and in 1988 was a member of the national team at the Seoul Olympics.

Schröter later became a regional politician for the left-winged SPD Party in the district of Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1990, he became chief of the sports department of Ludwigshafen. From 2001–09 he was county commissioner in Rhineland-Palatinate, and from 2010-16 vice president of the Regional Sports Federation in Rhineland-Palatinate.
