János Riheczky started work as a butcher’s assistant. In the 1920s he was in trouble with the law several times due to theft and disorderly conduct. To release his excess energy, he started wrestling in 1926 in the colors of Bp. MÁVAG. At the beginning of the 1930s, he spent two-and-a-half years in Paris, where he also wrestled in the affiliation of Hungarians in Paris. Between 1935 and 1948, in the colors of Bp. MÁVAG and MTE, he won 16 national and 10 Budapest championships both in the Greco-Roman and freestyle. He won his last championship at the age of 45.
Between 1935 and 1947 he was capped 23 times. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics he was eliminated after the third round in freestyle middleweight and finished unplaced. A year later, in the same discipline and weight group, he finished second at the European Championships in München. In addition to his sports career, he worked as a butcher at the Budapest slaughterhouse, and after graduation he worked as a trainer at the Bp. Húsos wrestling department. His son, Rezső, was a two-time Olympic rower.
