Format	Elimination by bad points. Win by fall = 0 points; win by decision = 1 point; loss by 2-1 decision = 2 points; loss by 3-0 decision = 3 points; loss by fall = 3 points. Three judges gave decisions; thus all decisions were either 2-1 or 3-0. Five bad points eliminated a wrestler.

Sweden’s Ivar Johansson was the defending champion and had won the 1934-35 European Championships. He should have been a heavy favorite, but he elected to compete in Berlin only in Greco-Roman, winning the middleweight gold medal in that event.

With Johansson out, the event was completely open, and eventually was won by France’s Émile Poilvé, who had never won a major international previously. Poilvé led after five rounds, with only American Dick Voliva remaining, but the Frenchman defeated Voliva by a fall in 10:25 to win the gold medal.
