Sweden’s Ivar Johansson was the defending champion and had won the 1934-35 European Championships, and should have been a heavy favorite, but he elected to compete in Berlin only in Greco-Roman, winning the middleweight gold medal in that event. With Johansson out, the event was completely open, and eventually was won by France’s Émile Poilvé who had never won a major international previously. Poilvé led after five rounds, with only American Dick Voliva remaining, but the Frenchman defeated Voliva by a fall in 10:25 to win the gold medal.
