Guido Fantoni began practicing Greco-Roman wrestling as a teenager with the Sempreavanti club. Although he won several titles, he moved on to Club Atletico Bolognese where, in the 1940s, he was one of the best Italian heavyweight wrestlers. He earned seven caps with the Italian national team, including bronze medals at the 1948 London Olympics and the 1953 World Championships. Fantoni also won gold at the first edition of the Mediterranean Games in 1951.
