Andrey Shumilin started wrestling after being encouraged by his father. At the age of 16, he began to show success in youth competitions, twice becoming World Junior Champion. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics he lost to Bruce Baumgartner (USA) in the bronze medal match, although Shumilin had defeated Baumgartner easily in an earlier round. At the World Championships, Shumilin won one silver and two bronze medals, and also won gold medals at the 1998 Goodwill Games and the European Championships.
Beginning in 2009 Shumilin served as President of the Olympic Council of the Kaliningrad Region, and around that time, he became active in politics of the region. He died of cancer while undergoing treatment in Germany.
