Biography

Ambroise Sarr was a renowned wrestler from Senegal who spent 45 years of his life dedicated to the sport. Sarr won multiple national and regional titles during his career, including two golds at the 1981 African Wrestling Championships, and gold at the 1987 All-Africa Games. He made his Olympic début at the 1976 Montréal Olympics where he competed in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines as a light-heavyweight but was eliminated early in each competition. Four years later he returned to the Olympics, this time competing in just the freestyle in the heavyweight class. He stayed in the same weight class for the Olympics in Los Angeles and Seoul, competing in the freestyle and Greco-Roman event, respectively. Sarr was a longtime coach of the Senegalese wrestling team, spending almost 30 years in charge.
