Georgian Davit Gvantseladze rose into prominence in 1960 when he won his first of five Soviet titles. He won his first Soviet title in Greco-Roman middleweight, but his later titles in Greco-Roman lightweight (in 1962, 1964-66). Gvantseladze first competed internationally at the 1963 World Championships, where he won silver in Greco-Roman lightweight. At the 1964 Olympics he won bronze. In addition his five Soviet Championships gold medals, Gvantseladze also won Greco-Roman lightweight silver at the 1963 Soviet Championships.
