Biography

Sergey Karamchakov, who competed as a light-flyweight freestyler his entire career, took up wrestling in 1976 and made the Soviet national team in 1983. He made his international début at the 1983 European Championships, where he was fifth. The high point of Karamchakov’s career was at the 1988 Olympics, where he won a bronze medal. In addition his Olympic bronze, Karamchakov also earned bronze at the 1987 World Championships and won World Cups in 1986 and 1988. Domestically, Karamchakov won two Soviet titles in 1987 and 1990. Karamchakov retired from sports after the fall of the Soviet Union and was later murdered.
