The son of a London jewellery manufacturer’s assistant, Alex Eke himself worked as a food fumigation officer. He was a member of the Great Britain basketball squad at the 1948 Olympics when he played in four of Britain’s eight matches. One of the most unusual matches Eke played in was at the Harringay Ice Rink in 1939. Basketball was still in its infancy as a competitive sport in Britain at the time, and London entertained Birmingham in an exhibition match.
