Melvin Clodfelter wrestled at Oklahoma A&M (later Oklahoma State), winning the 1928 NCAA title at 145 pounds. He also played football in college, graduating in 1928. He then coached high school wrestling in Enid, Oklahoma from 1928-35 and Ponca City, Oklahoma from 1935-41. Clodfelter served in World War II from 1941-46, reaching the rank of major, and then returned to Ponca City, coaching from 1946-50. His 1940 Ponca City team won the Oklahoma state championship. He was elected to the Oklahoma High School Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 1971.
