Steve Combs wrestled at the University of Iowa, winning a Big 10 wrestling title in his senior year. He was second at the NCAA Championships that year, 1963. Combs later became a high school wrestling coach in suburban Chicago and then an administrator of wrestling. In 1974 he became executive director of the USA Wrestling Federation. Combs was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1975 and was named National Wrestling Man of the Year in 1978.
