John Craige was a native Philadelphian who attended Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania. He lived an exciting, itinerant life. He joined the Marines in 1917, travelled to Alaska as a prospector, to Mexico as a mercenary soldier, and at one time was a professional boxer and the wrestling coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Later in life, as he settled down, he wrote military articles for the International News Service during World War II.
