Biography

Dick Delgado wrestled in high school in California and then joined the Navy, where he won an AAU freestyle title in 1953 and in 1954, eventually winning AAU championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. After his Navy service, Delgado enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he won three Big Seven/Eight conference championships, and was a three-time All-American, topped by winning the NCAA title in his junior and senior years. In 1958 he was given the NCAA Outstanding Wrestler Award. He won further AAU titles in 1956-57, for a total of six in all, and was second in 1958-60.

After his mat career ended in 1960, Delgado became a coach, first in Kansas, and then back in California, where he coached Saint Augustine High School, his alma mater, then San Diego High School, and eventually El Cajon Valley High School. He was later inducted into the University of Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, the California Wrestling Hall of Fame (2003), and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2011).
