Fritz Fivian was born in Switzerland and became a naturalized US citizen. He served in the US Army in Korea and competed on the US Army wrestling team. Fivian attended Oregon State at the time of the 1960 Olympics, graduating in 1962, after winning three conference titles. In 1959 he led Oregon State to the Pacific Coast Conference championship. Fivian placed second at the 1960 AAU meet in freestyle, but made the US Olympic team wrestling Greco-Roman.
