Biography

At the University of Illinois, Allie Morrison never lost a dual match in three years. He claimed three AAU Championships, winning that title at 135 lbs. from 1926-1928. In high school, Morrison had won Iowa state championships as a sophomore and junior, but was ineligible his senior year because he was too old. However, his coach was future basketball coaching legend Adolph Rupp, who knew nothing about wrestling, so he basically let Morrison coach the team his senior year. Morrison also played college football at Illinois, teaming with one of the all-time greats of the sport, Red Grange. After the 1928 Olympics, Morrison returned to Illinois for his senior year, but broke a vertebrae in his neck and was forced to give up the sport.

After his wrestling career ended, he became a wrestling and football coach. Morrison started coaching at Penn State, and then became football and wrestling coach at Doane College, outside of Omaha, Nebraska. He later left college coaching to teach English and coach at Omaha Central High School. Morrison was made a member of the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1977, the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association in 1982, the University of Nebraska-Omaha Athletics Hall of Fame inaugural class in 1996, the Des Moines Register Sports Hall of Fame in 2008, and was named a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1993.
