After high school Jay Robinson joined the military as an Army Ranger but after his service he competed for Oklahoma State University. He competed at the World Championships in 1970 and 1971, placing fourth and fifth in Greco-Roman, respectively. After the 1972 München Olympics he became an assistant coach at the University of Iowa under head coach Dan Gable. With Gable and Robinson leading them, the Hawkeyes won seven of eight NCAA titles from 1977-84.
Robinson left Iowa after the 1984 season and became head coach at the University of Minnesota in 1986. He coached the Gophers through 2016, leading them to NCAA titles in 2001, 2002, and 2007. He coached 14 NCAA individual champions and 63 different All-Americans. He also led the Gophers to six Big Ten titles and ended his career at Minnesota with a .753 winning percentage. Robinson was named to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005.
