Biography

Jim Scherr wrestled at the University of Nebraska, winning an NCAA title in 1984. He was US National Champion in 1986, 1987, and 1989, and won silver medals at the 1987 and 1989 World Championships. He also won a bronze medal at the 1987 Pan American Games. His twin brother, Bill, also wrestled for the US at the 1988 Olympics, winning a bronze medal in heavyweight freestyle.

In 1990 Scherr went into sports administration, becoming Executive Director of USA Wrestling from 1990-2000. He joined the US Olympic Committee in 2000, later becoming CEO, a role he held until 2009, after which he became commissioner of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). After a few years with the NCHC, Scherr became executive director of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association.

Scherr is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was 1994 USA Wrestling Man of the Year, was given the Order of Merit by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997, and was named a Distinguished Member in 2003.
