Gray Simons

Gray Simons wrestled flyweight freestyle for the United States at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics. He attended Lock Haven College in Pennsylvania, winning four NAIA Championships and three NCAA Championships, and twice being named Best Wrestler at the NCAAs. He finished his college career with a record of 91 wins and 2 losses, both losses coming in his freshman year. After his competitive days ended Simons entered coaching, first at his alma mater, coaching there from 1964-70. He was then at Indiana State University from 1970-75, then the University of Tennessee from 1975-86, and finally spending 17 years at Old Dominion University (1986-2003) before retiring. He finished his coaching career with a 324-194-5 dual meet record.

Simons is a member of the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame (1971), the NAIA Hall of Fame (1975), the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (1978), the Lock Haven State Hall of Fame (1981), the United States Achievement Hall of Fame (1982), the Pennsylvania State Wrestling Hall of Fame (1983), the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame (1982), and was named to the All-Time Collegiate Wrestling Team by Amateur Wrestling News in 1988.
