Gus Wester was from the National Turnverein in Newark, New Jersey, where he frequently practiced with Olympians Gus Bauer and George Mehnert. In the 1902 AAU Championships he lost in the finals to Mehnert at 115 lbs. This, and his Olympic silver medal, were his best finishes in major tournaments.
