Like several other wrestlers at the 1904 Olympics, Al Zirkel trained at the National Turnverein in Newark, New Jersey. He won one match at the 1904 Olympics before losing a hard-fought battle to Otto Roehm in the semi-finals. Zirkel had a long career as a fireman, eventually becoming a captain in the Newark Fire Department.
