Carrie Butler-Beashel was a windsurfer who competed at four consecutive Olympics – 1992-2004. Although she did not win an Olympic medal, she won a gold medal at the 1991 Pan American Games and a bronze at the 1995 Pan Ams, and also won a bronze at the 1994 Goodwill Games. She was second at the 1993 Mistral World Championships, won a bronze at the 1997 Kiel Week, and won the 1997 Australian Windsurfer Nationals.
Butler-Beashel was named USA Sailing’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1991, 1993, and 1994. She also competed in ocean racing in other classes, sailing as crew aboard the Maiden II when it broke the 24-hour distance record in 2002. In 1994 she was the first boardsailor to finish the 125-mile Newport Beach (California) to Ensenada (Mexico) Race, sailing across shark-infested waters. Carrie Butler married America’s Cup sailor Adam Beashel, and her brother-in-law, Colin Beashel, competed in six Olympic Games for Australia. Butler-Beashel competed for the Dana Point Yacht Club. She attended college at UC Irvine, graduating in 1993.
