Skipper Peter Ahrendt and his crew Ulrich Mense and Wilfried Lorenz on the East German Dragon-class yacht Mutafo did not start well at the 1964 Olympic races near Enoshima island on Sagami bay, when they finished 8th, 10th and 7th in their first three races, but after finishing first in their fourth race and twice second and once fourth in the remaining three races, it was enough to win a silver medal behind the Danish crew. The same Empor Rostock club sailing crew also won East German Dragon class titles from 1960-63 and 1965 and won silvers at the 1966 and 1967 East German championships.
Ahrendt studied mechanical engineering for vessels in Rostock and later worked at the Warnemünde Maritime Academy. He continued sailing well into his 70s, last competing in July 2007 at the three-day BMW Sailing Cup at the age of 73.
