Biography

Ulrich Mense and Wilfried Lorenz sailed with skipper Peter Ahrendt on the East German Dragon class yacht Mutafo. They did not start well at the 1964 Olympic races near Enoshima Island on Sagami Bay, when they finished 8th, 10th and 7th in their first three races, but after finishing first in their fourth race and twice second and once fourth in the remaining three races, it was enough to win a silver medal behind the Danish crew. The same Empor Rostock club sailing crew also won East German Dragon class titles from 1960-63 and 1965, and won silvers at the 1966 and 1967 East German championships.

Mense entered the board of his home club Empor Rostock after his active sailing career. By profession, he was an economic engineer in a fishery combine at Rostock.
