Bill Allen was originally an alternate on the 1972 Olympic team, but at the Games he was chosen to join Bill Bentsen as crew for Buddy Melges and between them they won the Olympic Soling class by a handsome margin. Allen won a national title in the 1970 E Scow class and was 1972 National Champion in the Finn class. He graduated from Colorado College in 1971 with a degree in business administration.
