Tor Arneberg was born and grew up in Oslo, competing in Alpine and Nordic skiing in the winter and sailing in the summer during his younger days. He went to the United States for his studies, and was a 1950 graduate of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where he was a prominent member of the ski team, and in 1953 he graduated with an MBA from Harvard Business School. In the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 he was a crew member of the Norwegian 6-metre Elisabeth X, winning a silver medal.
In 1954 Arneberg married American Jean Overhyser, and they had three daughters. Five years later the family emigrated to the United States. In 1967, Arneberg obtained US citizenship, and shortly thereafter joined the Xerox Corporation as a Director of Marketing. He later settled in Woodstock, Vermont, but in 2012 moved to Belleair, Florida, due to failing health.
Arneberg’s two older sisters, Vibeke Lunde and Else Christophersen, both became Olympians. Vibeke married into the well-known Norwegian sailing Lunde family dynasty, and won a silver medal in the 5.5-metre class in 1952, and Else competed in equestrian (dressage) in 1952 and 1956.
