In 1947, George Brown and Jack Wallace were Eric Strain’s two crew members aboard Ceres, which became the first Northern Ireland boat to win the coveted Gold Cup for the Dragon World Championship. The following year, the three men were aboard Ceres II in the Dragon class at the London Olympics. Despite two race wins, in races 3 and 5, they could only finish better than fourth position overall.
George Brown followed both his father and grandfather into yacht racing, as his grandfather, John Shaw Brown, was the one-time commodore of the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club. George worked in the Belfast family linen business founded by his grandfather, but also had a spell as managing director of the Belfast Ropeworks, before returning to the family business.
