Shipping agent David Dunlop was one of nine children of coachman James Dunlop and his wife Hannah. Sadly, his father died two days after his 47th birthday, when David was just six years of age. David went on to become one of the 10 crew members aboard Thomas Glen-Coats’ Hera, which won gold in the 12-metre class at the 1908 Olympics. Like all the other members of the crew, Dunlop was a member of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club, which happened to be the venue for the 12-metre event at the 1908 Games.
