José Manuel Quina was one of three brothers, alongside Mário and Francisco, who represented Portugal in Olympic sailing. As the youngest, José Manuel got an early start in both swimming and sailing after World War II, and was runner-up at the Snipe national championships in 1950 as a teenager. He won his first national title in the Sharpie class two years later, and first appeared at the European Championships in 1957, where he placed fourth in the Star class. After coming in fifth in 1958 at the Europeans, he became the national Star champion in 1959. This led to his selection for the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he and Mário won the silver medal.
The duo continued to compete in this class and were fourth at the 1967 European Championships. José Manuel, however, began competing solo in the Finn class as well, and was national champion from 1966 through 1974. During this time, he was also eighth at the 1967 European Championships and 11th at the 1972 Munich Olympics. In the Star class, he and Mário were runners-up at the 1968 national championships and 17th at that year’s Mexico City Olympics.
José Manuel took a decade off of competitive sailing, but returned in 1984 to compete in the Sharpie class, coming in fifth at the European Championships. He was national champion in this class in 1985 and third in 1988 and 1990. He continued to compete through 2008. He was also a competitive swimmer and had some good results in the early 1950s. He is a Grand Officer of the Order of Prince Henry.
