West German sailor Wolfgang, father of Ferdinand Gerz, became known to the general public in 1980 when he applied to the IOC for a permit to compete as a single starter, despite the Olympic boycott by the Western countries. His request was rejected, but four year later he finished fifth in the Finn dinghy class at the Long Beach sailing events. In 1981 be won the World Championships and in 1985 became German Champion, in the soling class.
By profession, Gerz has worked as a doctor in München from 1987, and operated a private general medical practice with a strictly naturopathic focus.
