Biography

Piero Gorgatto took part at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics in the Dragon Class as crew. In 1952 he won the prestigious Coupe Virginie Hériot alongside Sergio Sorrentino and Annibale Pelaschier. In 1955, also with Sorrentino, he won the Olimpia Cup and the Marblehead Trophy on the boat Tergeste.

Before leaving for Australia in 1956, with Sorrentino and Pelaschier he won the Pagani Cup, the Coppa Armatori Liberi (Free Owners Cup), and the Duke of Edinburgh Cup at Rothsay-Clyde (Scotland) on his Olympic boat Aretusa. After his death, his sailing club in Trieste (Yacht Club Adriatico) honored him with the Challenge Piero Gorgatto every year. It was given by his family to the best crewman in the region.
