Biography

Substantial family brewing interests gave Old Harrovian John Gretton the financial means to devote his time to sailing and politics, and he was eminently successful at both. He was a Member of the House from 1895 to 1943 and although other gold medallists have subsequently become Members of Parliament he is the only person to have won an Olympic title while actually serving as an MP. In 1900 Gretton, who was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, married the daughter of Lord Ventry. He was awarded the CBE in 1919, became a Privy Counselor in 1926 and in 1944 was created the 1st Baron Gretton of Stapleford.
