A member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, England-born George Gyles was selected to represent Canada in the 8 metre class at the 1932 Summer Olympics, alongside Ernest Cribb, Peter Gordon, Harry Jones, Ronald Maitland, and Hubert Wallace. Despite losing all four races, the Canadians brought home a silver medal from the Games because the only other nation to enter the 8 metre tournament was the United States. Gyles was heavily involved with the RVYC for much of his life and served as Commodore of the club in 1922, 1923, 1927, 1928, 1940, and 1941. He was made an honorary life member in 1953. By career he was an accountant and served as president of the Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in 1937-1938.
