Paul Hannam of Vancouver took up sport sailing as a teenager and hit his prime during the mid-1990s when he was selected, alongside Brian Storey, to represent Canada in the 470 class at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. There, the duo placed 20th in a field of 36 teams, with a best finish of fourth in the final race. By career, Hannam studied medicine at the University of British Columbia, graduating in 1999, and later became the Chief of Emergency Medicine at North York General Hospital in Toronto. He also worked as a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and remained active athletically as a marathon runner.
