Biography

Richard Hoad was born into a sporting family, with his father Teddy captaining the West Indies Test cricket team in the 1930s. Richard also played cricket, as well as other sports including field hockey and sailing, becoming proficient in the latter. He started yacht sailing with his brothers, which saw him and one of his siblings win bronze in the Snipe class at the 1966 Central American and Caribbean Games. Nearly three decades later, and now in his early 60s, Hoad represented Barbados at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the Soling event along with David Staples and Jason Teller. He also had the honour of being the nation’s flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony. Hoad served as the President of the Barbados Sailing Association and was a self-taught architect.
