Joseph Jessop joined the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) in 1917 and became the Commodore of the club in 1929, the youngest Commodore in SDYC history. Jessop was instrumental in starting the San Diego Bay Star fleet in 1925. He also was a supporter of junior sailing in the United States. Jessop won several Pacific Coast Championships and was second in the 1928 World Championships. He founded a family jewelry company and was active in civic affairs in San Diego.
