Biography

Hans Meulengracht Madsen was as a wholesaler in København (Copenhagen). In 1917, he married Gudrun Andersen and had one son with her. Hans Meulengracht-Madsen was the brother of the Olympic gymnastics medallists Vigo Meulengracht Madsen and Svend Meulengracht Madsen.

In the duel of his “Nurdug II” and the French “Mac Miche” in the 6 metres class at the 1912 Olympic Games, the two yachts tied after two races. In the match-race for gold, “Nurdug II” trailed by almost three minutes and won silver. In 1919, Meulengracht Madsen went to San Francisco for a sailing competition and won the Wilson Cup. On his return, the Danish King Christian X presented him with a tie pin with his name and 36 diamonds in it. The “Nurdug II” was later transferred to Brazil, where she is still used for competitions under the name “Aileen”.
