South African-born Charles Reynolds, who learned his early sailing skills in Durban, was the son of former Royal Natal Yacht Club Commodore Guy Reynolds. Charles competed in both the 1968 and 1972 Olympics in the three person Dragon and Soling classes respectively. After a 14th place finish in Acapulco, he came close to a medal at Kiel four years later. Reynolds, along with Barry Dunning and John Oakeley, got into a medal place after wining race four, but could not hold on to it and finished fifth. Unfortunately, because of the Israeli Massacre in München, the event was reduced to six races. A seventh race might have seen the British trio win a medal.
Reynolds was a member of the 1975 Hong Kong Admiral’s Cup Team and at the age of 69 took part in the 2012 Round the Isle of Wight Race, 49 years after he first entered the event. By profession Reynolds was an engineer.
