The three medalists in this race crushed the opposition as, with the exception of a sixth place in race one by Denmark, by East Germany in the sixth race, and by the United States in race two, all three boats finished in the top four of all the other races. Except for those two blips, the United States and Denmark placed in the top three of all their races. The US boat won four of the last five races, finishing second in the first and fifth races, to easily take the gold medal over Denmark, with East Germany winning bronze.
