Juhani Salovaara was at the peak of his sailing career during the 1960s and won his first Nordic title, in the Vikla class, in 1961. He was then European runner-up in that class in 1962, in addition to being the Finnish national champion. In 1964, he was selected to represent his country in the 5.5 metres class at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where he and his crew of Johan Gullichsen and Peter Fazer placed sixth.
